The ‘Festivalization’ of Fitness

If you’ve ever struggled to snag a bike in your favorite indoor cycling class or been put on the wait list for your morning boot camp, you know that group fitness is hot. So hot, in fact, that companies are dreaming up fresh ways to offer “mass participatory sports events.” Mass yoga classes are already out there. And, now, fitness festivals are popping up in cities across the globe. Instead of attending a simple music festival, you get music plus plenty of exercise classes — and a whole lot more. There are sunrise yoga classes, 5Ks, 10Ks and half marathons, special appearances by celebrity fitness trainers, and talks by sports psychologists. Many festivals also offer everything from meditation classes and massages to cooking demos and delicious food.
