Feeling stiff and achy? Whether it’s from too much sitting or too much exercising (hello, all you CrossFit and spinning fans), muscle stiffness is a common cause of pain. Enter stretching studios, the latest wave in health and fitness. While scientific evidence is controversial about the exact benefits of stretching (yes, it may help in injury recovery of some muscle strains; no, stretching pre-exercise probably won’t help with muscle soreness ), few will deny that flexibility and the range of motion that comes with it is needed to perform everyday activities such as reaching, bending, and lifting with relative ease – and without pain. And if your muscles are tight, your range of motion will be limited. While you may not need to visit a fitness studio solely devoted to stretching, spending some time working to improve your range of motion, especially as you age, can only be beneficial.
