If 2018 already has you feeling like you’re running on life’s treadmill at an impossible pace, the solution to slowing down may be just a yoga class away. While some of today’s yoga classes seem to promote athleticism and competition, plenty encourage relaxation. Restorative yoga is one such practice, calming the body and mind through stillness or gentle movement, slow and deep breathing, and a focus on the present moment. Typically, a restorative yoga sequence involves just a handful of gentle poses using props, such as bolsters or yoga blocks, to help total relaxation. Each pose is held for several minutes. This type of practice lowers breathing and heart rate, decreases blood pressure, and lowers levels of cortisol, the primary stress hormone. Think of it as downtime for your nervous system.
